Red Pill Now Is Fully Engaged

Red Pill Now is delighted to be part of this year’s Engage 2018 event being held in Rotterdam from Monday May 21 to Wednesday May 23. Engage is always one of the premium events on the Notes/Domino calendar and this year’s event promises to be the best yet. The event is being held on a boat, the SS Rotterdam, a first for me, and I’m sure many others. I believe attendance has been capped at around 400 due to the finite space that is available on the boat of this size and the event is widely expected to sell out. So don’t miss out on the fun and excitement and register early. With over 80 sessions there will be more technical content than IBM Think but nowhere near as hard to locate all your friends and colleagues…. I did mention we were all on a boat, right?

The following is a run-down of Red Pill Now’s engagement for this year’s event.

13:30 Take-5 Modernization Workshop (Trinadad)

Peter Presnell, Bob Kadrie, Jason Gary (HCL) Mat Newman (IBM), Viktor Krantz, Devin (Spanky) Olson

As a platinum sponsor Red Pill we have the chance to conduct a 3.5 hour workshop on Monday, the day before Tuesday’s official opening. The workshops are a new addition to the program. Red Pill Now had a very successful workshop at MWLUG last year and Theo was very supportive of our suggestion of bringing this to Engage in 2018. We want to start rocking the boat early so we have decided to bring in an all-star cast for this workshop. This is a Design Thinking session in which you the attendees will have the chance to share your views and opinions about application modernization. The workshop will be hosted by Bob Kadrie and myself as we share some of the latest thinking in application modernization before attendees break up into four colorful teams. Team Pink will be lead buy Jason Gary from HCL. Those in Team Yellow will be lead by none other than Mat Newman from IBM. And because we know these two gentleman are famous for their brightly colored suits Red Pill Now will be joining the party with Viktor Krantz leading Team Red in his own red suit. Not to be outdone, Devin (Spanky) Olson will be dressed in his own bright green suit to lead Team Green. This promises to be one of the most entertaining sessions at Engage so don’t miss outs. Spots for the workshop are limited and you can get your name on the list to be on one of these teams as part of your conference registration.

9:00 Keynote and Opening General Session & Warp Speed Sponsoring (Theatre)

Engage officially kicks off on Tuesday with Huguette Ranc, Bob Schultz, Richard Jefts, Andre Manby and others delivering the latest news about ICS and Domino 2025. This promises to be one of the most exciting Opening General Sessions for Notes/Domino die-hards for many years as IBM and HCL share the latest news. Domino 10 is expected to ship before the end of the year so there are bounds to be lots of news and updates. Red Pill Now will be represented as part of the Warp-Speed Sponsoring that takes place at the end of the session.

Peter Presnell (Red Pill Now), Jason Gary (HCL), Mat Newman (IBM), Francie Tanner (Panagenda), Simon Vaughan (AppFusions)

I can trace my role as a speaker speak back to my participation in LotusSphere Idol many years ago. Given the renewed interest and energy in the Domino platform it felt like we needed to do something similar to develop a new generation of speakers for future events. Theo has taken my suggestion and put together the inaugural edition of Engage Idol in which SIX speakers who have never spoken at Engage before have been given the chance to present before a panel of guest judges for the chance to secure one of two 20-minute speaking slots on the final day. Please join us for fun, entertainment and the chance to encourage a new generation of ICS speakers.

Turk Ergun, Nathan T Freeman, Bob Kadrie, Viktor Krantz, Devin (Spanky) Olson, Peter Presnell, Keith Strickland (Red Pill Now)

The application modernization world is constantly changing and along with it comes a sea of technologies and buzz words. In this light-hearted session we will explain many of these terms in the style of Dr Seuss. We gave this session at MWLUG last year and everyone had a lot of fun so we have decided to bring it to engage with an expanded cast and an updated set of technologies as we make our way from Applications to Zapier.

16:25 Countdown to Domino 2025 (Trinidad)

Devin (Spanky) Olson (Red Pill Now)

In the second of two mini-sessions, Devin Olson will be providing a series of tips and technique for preparing your existing Domino applications for a new and exciting future with Domino 10 and beyond. We are working on adding a couple of special guests (TBA) that will add additional depth to this presentation, so stay tuned and be prepared for a 20-minute drink from the Domino fire hose.

17:50 Speed Sponsoring (Sponsor Area)

Viktor Krantz, Turk Ergun (Red Pill Now)

Red Pill Now always strive to make our Speed Sponsoring just a little different to the others, so be prepared for almost anything as you make your way around the sponsor area to hear a short presentation from each and every one of the sponsors who help to make this a free conference to attend. And because we are design thinkers we have ensured that our session is close to the bar to cater for all your mid-session drinking needs.

Wednesday, May 23

Peter Presnell, Keith Strickland (Red Pill Now)

In this session we will be showcasing the latest work being done in the R&D labs at Red Pill Now on building a voice interface for Domino databases using Amazon Echo. We are super excited about the potential of smart digital assistances to dramatically change the way we will interact with applications in the not too distant future. So please join us in the Sun Room as we shine a little light on where we believe the Domino platform is headed in 2025 and beyond.

10:00 Take-5 Introduction (Meeting Room)

11:30 Reusability is the Goal (Sky Room)

Keith Strickland (Red Pill Now)

IBM and HCL are now on record as having said their plans are to have Domino rock JavaScript.  In this session Red Pill Now’s own JavaScript guru Keith Strickland is going to share his experience with the language and demonstrate the results of five years work undertaken to significantly reduce the start-up time for creating new Domino applications using JavaScript. This is a technical deep dive for hard-core developers who are already, or soon to be, working with JavaScript as part of their Domino projects.

12:30 The History of Notes/Domino and the Events that Shaped Us (Theatre)

Viktor Krantz (Red Pill Now), Theo(Mr Engage) Hesselmans, Uffe Sorrenson (IBM), Rob Novak, Mat Newman (IBM)

Engage turns 10 at this event, and with Domino 10 just round the corner we thought it was an appropriate time to bring a bit of nostalgia to this year’s event. We have invited a number of Lotus Legends to walk us through a brief history of the Notes/Domino platform in what should be a fun-filled session hosted by Viktor Krantz. And we want everyone to join in the fun by wearing a retro Lotus t-shirt and/or to bring along your favorite piece of Notes memorabilia from over the years. We will be awarding some cool prizes for the best items presented.

13:30 Take-5 Introduction (Meeting Room)

Peter Presnell, Turk Ergun, Bob Kadrie, Viktor Krantz (Red Pill Now)

The final chance to learn about our new application modernization solution called Take-5. Please contact us to secure a spot at one of these three meetings. One lucky attendee will win an Amazon Echo Show.

15:10 Freeman/Gary (Guadaloupe)

Nathan T Freeman (Red Pill Now), Jason Gary (HCL)

Tired of hearing all those questions being evaded at Ask The Developer and/or Ask the Product Manager? Well Red Pill Now has the answer. Join us as Nathan T Freeman attempts to nail Jason Gary to the wall with a series of hard-hitting questions for which Jason is barred from uttering the response “I’ll get back to you on that”. Have a hard-hitting question of your own? Find your way to the bar Tuesday night, and for the cost of a tequila Nathan will add your question to the list of  gotchas to be asked. After this session is finished you may feel the need to buy Jason a drink to help him recover from the grilling. What can possibly go wrong when the man who made yellow hair a powerful statement at LotusSphere only to later have somebody else decide to make his own fashion statement wearing a pink suit? Who will come out on top in this epic battle? It matters not, as long as we get straight answers about what Jason has in mind for the future of Domino.

16:00 Engage Idol: The Winners

We will all be winners having attended Engage 2018, but here is your chance to hear from the two winners of the Engage Ido auditions. These two 20-minute sessions will have undergone more scrutiny than any of the other sessions ti get here so there almost certainly going to be great sessions from two people who have never spoken at Engage before.

17:00 Closing Session

Before a final round of drinks get under way Theo will have a few closing words and sponsors such as Red Pill Now will be giving away some great prizes.
