The Lowdown on Low-Code

During the recent Microsoft Inspire conference Satya Nadella made a comment that really caught my attention. “500 million new apps are going to be created in the next five years. Think about that, that’s more apps than in the last 40 years”.

The source of Satya’s statement appears to be IDC’s Top 10 Predictions for Worldwide IT in 2019. These predictions include a growth of citizen developers that would increase the developer population by 30%.  Combined with a dramatic expansion in the use of low-code platforms, IDC then predicts 500 million new logical application being created from 2018 to 2023. Gartner are predicting that low-code development will account for more than 65% of application development activity by 2024. While Forrester are estimating the low-code market will grow to $15.5 billion by 2020.

Taken at face value these predictions represent a very profound change to the way we look at low-code platforms as well as the role of citizen developers. I’m not completely surprised by the potential low-code has to offer.
